Happy New Year! Look What's New for 2016! Thrifty Vintage Gluten-Free Recipes Book!

After years of loyal readers asking me to publish a retro cook book, I am doing it! But rather than recipes from the 1950s I've gone back earlier to what I believe to be the America's most delicious, nutritious, simple and economical time for home cooking.

A common theme I've heard and read in many online discussions is that it's not possible to eat healthily and/or lose weight on a limited budget. My book will offer some solutions to those who want to "eat retro," lose weight and not break the bank.  It's also for those who want simple, wholesome meals.

What led me to the thrifty WWI era through the Great Depression was my own need to scale back on my budget after my divorce. I wanted to find more meatless cooking and creative uses of affordable staples. What I didn't expect was to be quite blown away by the wide variety of natural, unrefined sweeteners in use along with humble presentations similar to the hippies cooking of the 1960s! Many of the recipes are naturally gluten-free. I also tried some new-to-me cuts of "poor man's" meat and no, I did not eat squirrel!

The sources for my recipes are from my extensive collection of World War One era ladies' magazines along with church cook books and food manufacturer's booklets dated from the 1920s through the 1930s. Many will be kitchen-tested by me along with photos and yes, calorie counts, too!

You can expect to see more Depression-Era cookery and related posts on my blog as I delve further into my book and live on a leaner budget. The expected publication date for Thrifty Vintage Gluten-Free Recipes (Kindle) is late spring. My other book, Eat Retro: The Retro Diet is still in the works.

Happy New Year!
